What would be more fun than listening to music, playing games, and hanging out with awesome people while making a difference in the fight against cancer? Asurea’s Relay for Life team in Roseville, CA couldn’t think of anything, either! Relay for Life with Asurea on-board will take place Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Cooley Middle School. It’s a chance for us to honor cancer survivors, remember those we’ve lost to the disease, and raise funds and awareness to help find a cure.
Alyvia Campagna, a Talent Acquisition Specialist at Asurea’s corporate office in Roseville used to work for Best Buy. More than five years ago, she led her company’s team in local Relay for Life events as a way for Best Buy to give back to the community.
And now she’s doing the same at Asurea: putting together a Relay for Life Team.
“I really liked it the first time I did it,” said Campagna, who hopes to raise at least $1,000 between now and April. This year will mark her fifth time participating in the always bittersweet affair. “I like that Relay for Life supports every type of cancer.”
From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., companies, schools, church groups and families will represent their teams mainly by walking or running along the relay track during the entire 12-hour event. The idea is that at all times, someone from each team is expected to be on the track. The thought is that “cancer never sleeps, so neither will we,” explains Campagna.
“Cancer never sleeps. Neither will we.”
Each team usually opts to set up a booth along the relay track. This allows them to continue raising funds during the event by selling a product or service at their respective booths.
“When I was with Best Buy, we charged a dollar for people to use a Wii that was hooked up to a big-screen TV,” said Campagna. “The kids really loved it.”
As for Asurea, the company is still deciding how best to raise funds on the day of the event. So, Campagna says to stay tuned.
Honoring the fighters
During the Survivors Lap, cancer survivors take the first lap around the track to the sound of cheers from the crowd. Campagna says this symbolic lap is a real “tear-jerker” moment. And it’s understandable. Even if your closest loved ones aren’t walking that track, you probably know someone whose life has been touched or taken by cancer.
The nighttime Luminaria Ceremony honors those who have fought or fallen to cancer. By nightfall, candles are lit inside of personalized paper luminary bags and then placed around the relay track. Campagna emphasizes that anyone can dedicate a luminaria online in honor of a loved one. You don’t even have to attend.
The Fight Back Ceremony is described as “emotionally powerful.” It’s designed to inspire participants to take action. And it symbolizes the emotional commitment that we all must take to fight cancer year-round.
Relay for Life “helps with cancer research and it helps caregivers, too,” said Campagna, adding that it also helps young girls find wigs after they have lost their hair to chemotherapy.
In 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt circled a track in Tacoma, Washington for 24 hours. His goal? To fund the fight against cancer. Within that 24-hour, Forrest Gump-like effort, he raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. A year later, more than 300 supporters joined him for what would become a yearly event. Since then, Relay for Life has gone on to raise almost $5 billion.
Dr. Klatt lost his own battle with stomach cancer in 2014 at the age of 71.
Our Asurea team is always ready to join a good cause — and Relay for Life is one of them!
Campagna says that you can join the team even if you can’t attend the event. She urges everyone to help raise funds simply by sharing the link to Asurea Roseville’s Team Page on social media. “You don’t even have to be an employee to join the team,” she said, “so invite your friends and family to participate as well!”
We hope to see you on the track in April! Not in the Sacramento/Roseville area? Find an event near you! For 24/7 online cancer support, visit cancer.org or call (800) 227-2345.
Let’s go, Team Asurea! Hey, maybe we can shout at Relay events across the country: “Relay for Life!”
